I have hardwood stairs and my little guy did slip and rolled down. Fractured his elbow and after $900 at vet and consultation was told he would need surgery of $3400. Needless to say I could not afford the surgery and his leg healed well on its own he is back to normal. This does not always happen I was lucky hence the reason I now have insurance. So yes you may want to gate the stairs until they are much older. Even now my yorkie is 7 months remembers and does not go up and down readily.
