I was told by a friend that has bred Yorkies for 34 years that Yorkies are very fragile and should not jump off of furniture or anything high up. However, my Sidney jumps up very high and jumps off of furniture that is really high. She is fine and gets real excited a lot when she starts jumping around. I would keep the stairs gated though because if your Yorkie does slip down them it could hurt her really badly. I've fallen down hardwood stairs and it hurts me, let alone a 5 lb dog.
