I started Baxter and Cooper on litter box training when we did not have a fenced in yard , and sometimes they were home alone too long to hold it. I used it instead of potty pads because I thought it would be cheaper than constantly changing pads..
PROS
1. Can't be shredded or moved around like potty pads.
2. Absorbs odor (urine)
3. A little cheaper than potty pads--a large bag (15 lbs I think), lasts me about a month to six weeks. One bag is about $14. Now that we have our yard fenced in, only Baxter still uses the indoor potty.
Cons:
1. Will have to use bitter apple on it until they learn to not eat it
2. The litter does track some, I sweep it up, or use the dustbuster daily.
3. Dog litter is harder to find than pee pads, the only places I've found it is at Petco or Petsmart.
4. Dogs have a dry place to go when its rainy or cold outside.
Tips:
I buy the large geriatric bed pads by the case at Sam's. I line the bottom of the potty box with one, then put the box inside a large trash bag, then fill it with litter. When it is time to empty it, I can just empty the bag.
The pads also come in handy to put underneath the box..the largest size will stick out enough on all 4 sides to absorb any mistakes--Baxter sometimes starts peeing before he makes it all the way in... |
