What we did was to leave the leash on him for a while in the house. When he was little it was a great help and something we were told to help in potty training. He was less sensitive to it.

My hubby is handicapped and has trouble catching him. (They are sooooo fast) so during the day I still leave it on him if I am not going to be home.

We of course watch him closely with it on.
