Default Winter and Yorkies

We live in MN and the winters can be brutal. Our Lhasa Poo had problems with the cold sometimes, now we have this 7# Yorkie! Do any of you litter box train your little ones for winter? I just got her housebroke but now I'm worried about her going out in winter. Hubby used to shovel a special path for the Lhasa Poo and she would still get to cold sometimes even though the snow wasn't deep. She loved the snow and would play in it on warmer days, but there were a few times on colder days she got so cold just going potty I'd have to carry her back because she'd hold her feet up and then just lay down in the snow. I know she would have frozen to death if I hadn't been watching her. If you litter box trained them how did you do it, was it hard? I mentioned little box training her when I adopted her and the lady I got her from said it was "ALOT OF WORK". Like it was a big deal so I didn't do it.
