The vet told me that some puppies don't push hard enough when they poop, and don't empty the glands on their own, so consequently they fill up. It is indeed a fishy smell. Joey needed some help with this for about first six months, and if the glands weren't emptied, he did a little scooting thing on the floor. I think it's best if the vet shows you the proper procedure, if done wrong, you can push the contents further up, and this can lead to a serious problem. This is automatically done by some groomers, however many vets believe it's not necessary unless your dog has a problem. Joey outgrew this condition, and hasn't had any problems with it for over 1½ years.
