Yes, I think the thing to do is to either find another groomer who you can have a good heart to heart talk with about what you've experienced, what you expect and that you trust or learn to groom him at home.
I've decided to groom Abby and Daisy at home too. I just groomed Abby today for the first time and it went pretty well. It took a long time because we took breaks inbetween and I had to sneak up on her while she was sleeping to cut the hair close to her eyes, but for what I paid for a couple good pairs of scissors and clippers, I couldn't even have had them groomed once! And I don't worry the whole time they're gone.
