Wow $400 and no overnight stay. That to me is high. There was a vet in the area we used to live in. In his older years granted. He would spay/neuter cats still but not dogs. He said that cats were for whatever reason easier and would just charge people what the supplies cost him, he wouldn't charge any extra. He told my mom it was because he had been doing it for so long and that he wasn't in it for the money that he had more than enough money for him and his family.
My mom had two cats fixed and I'm thinking for both of them it was around $60. So sometimes you do find them out there. They are people that are just doing as a service to their community and for the love of the animals.
You definitely don't find that anymore but, like you said they have their staff that has to be paid as well. So you can't blame them cost of living is different everywhere and that is really what dictates what people charge for any services yet, I'm sure that there are some people out there that are greedy just like in anything else. Sorry to ramble and if I got off topice here.
