I can so relate with you on this and am also curious to hear what others have to say. Our little girl is 7 months and doesn't let us know. We are trained ... we take her when we think it is time. Maybe they have to be a certain age to do this. Sorry I am not much help, but I am sure many on here will have some good advise for us. We will go days without a prob and then low and behold a surprise for us on the puppy pad. Which is certainly better than the floor ... but outside is the place for me! Here's hoping we get some really good advice!
