Oh my he is sooo smart! Do you reward him for using the pad each time? We do our yorkie still, even though it's been since Feb, ha.
What you said about him using your newspaper reminded me of what my Elvis did. I had cleaned one of the bathrooms and had placed the rugs upside down on the carpet until I was thru mopping, but decided not to mop but to do it later on, so I just transferred the rugs, still upside down, back into the bathroom. Mind you, these rugs are white on the bottom...well, little Elvis thought he'd found a new pee pad AND some privacy too...I went back in there several days later to do the mopping job and lo and behold, Elvis had been using them as pee pads!
Including poo too! It was petrified, LOL. Yikes!
