The main reason people show is to prove that your dog is worth breeding. If you are going to breed - you need to know the standard and make sure your dog is as close to the standard as possible. As well as testing to be completed, etc... I take it very serious when I bring a pup into the world and know that I am totally responsible for it. So both the dam and the sire better be good representation of the breed. This cost, since usually the parents of that dog should be good representation of the breed, will be around 2500 and up. Any sub standard qualities will get passed on.
