I know I'm getting off topic here, but I think the difference is in the connotation of the word, and not the physical structure. A crate is a place a dog has been taught to find as a safe, secure den to rest and sleep, whereas a cage is a prison from which the dog is eager to escape and has a more negative connotation. The physical objects can look the same, but I think the words show different intent by the owner and/or different perspective from the dog.

End my off topic philosophizing....
