Potty training First of all, I wouldn't use a pee pad. I think they are bad ideas. Probably the only way to get rid of the smell and prevent your Yorkie from smelling it and pottying in the same place would be to replace that carpet and pad! A professional carpet cleaner might be able to inject the spot with something that will take the smell out. I would just let your Yorkie outside every 2 hours and crate her at night. My youngest Yorkie is 13 months old and has been able to hold it for 10 hours through the night for several months now. Occasionally the mother, who is about 3 years old, will let me know she has to go outside, but usually I just ask them and they run to the door. When they are active, the two younger ones have to be taken outside every 2 hours or they will have an accident. We got our yard fenced in and it was a God send! The dogs love it and so do we!
As far as training them to tell you by ringing a bell, you have to start when they are young puppies, take them to the door, take their paw and ring the bell, and immediately put them outside. I don't know if waiting until they are 8 months old, this will work, but I think it might. It's worth a try. I had a neighbor who trained her Schnauzer to ring a bell and I thought that was so cool. I should have done that with my three Yorkies, but guess I was too lazy. When I tried doing this with a Lhasa puppy, I used some bells that came from Pier One and trailed down a string. I hung it from the door knob. He was catching on quite well, but alas, I didn't keep it up.
