I've always referred to any dog that is not purebred as a "mutt." I've owned dogs in my life that I referred to as mutts--some I knew the parenting breeds, some I didn't. Both terms are
slang terms, there really is no right or wrong usage. What they mean or imply depends on who you ask and how they choose to react to them.
