You could put up an xpen and put his crate and pad in the middle of it, so he could still go into when he wants, but gives him more space without it being the whole bedroom.
We have two that are free when we are gone and one that is crated. I honestly wish we had continued crating Wrigley. She has separation anxiety and I think she would have felt more secure in the smaller space, but we didn't feel like we were being fair. Camden does great in a crate and I think we will continue with it, we just got her a larger one for more room. We aren't gone all day, every day though.
