I have had two pro-football clients come to me with stories of their Yorkies being taken off by birds of prey (owls) when let out at night to potty. In both cases the woman of the house was out on the back stoop watching them potty when they had been taken.

There is nothing that I can suggest other than being there. Put a bell on your dogs harness/collar has seemed to help in some situations. Also, teaching your dog a fast recall will help if you are out there with them. Shy of being there, teaching your dog a fast recall or simply keeping them on a leash...there really isn't much to do. You can ask your local wildlife center if they can come remove the hawk (some do) if it's just the one, but unfortunantely your options really are quite limited.

If you don't mind, you could always create a sizeable fenced part of the yard that is covered. There are cat fanciers that do this all the time.
