Default Crate training and using the ex pen

I have been crate training Alfie, which for the most part is working great. When I have been gone for a while, I have been putting him in his exercise pen with a pee pad. He's been missing the pee pad quite often. I'm thinking about leaving him in his crate when I'm gone for the shorter increments, about 4-5 hours. Is that too long to leave him in there?

When I am gone for a long time, I will probably continue to leave him in his ex pen. He knows what the pee pads are for as he's gone on them several times, but I think when he gets that much space to wander, he is just more prone to having accidents. Any tips to get him to get used to the bigger space, yet know that he can't just go wherever in his ex pen?

Thanks!
