I'm no expert, this is from my own experience with my first and only yorkie: At around 7 months we took Elvis in for a second grooming, the frist grooming just being one for him to get used to being handled. The second one was for a puppy cut.

I had noticed prior to this grooming session, that his hair on his back looked to be grayish next to the black "puppy fur" and about 1/2 inch or a little less. Well, when we picked him up later that day I was sooo surprised when the groomer brought out this little gray dog that I didn't readily recognize...it was my Elvis!!

All his black puppy fur was cut off and the hair beneath was a dark gray. Now his tail is still blackish and the rest of him is still the golden, but his body is now a dark gray...depending on the lighting, it can look light too.
