They wrap the coat to protect a show dog's coat from breakage. The show dog's coat has to be at least floor length I believe, and this also helps keep it from getting knotted or snarled or dirty when they are so long. At least that is what I've read. Mine is still in her original puppy coat so I don't have to do that. I might later but I dunno.
