Anita the DNA does not read for genetic defects although its a requirement of the AKC to have it on file in case there is a dispute or question regarding parenting. DNA is only needed for a stud used more than 3 times a year or 10 times over his life time. AKC sends you the kit ($35.00 I believe)a brush of sorts, your stud he chews on it from the inside of his cheek then send it off to AKC only for "record purpose"

The tests you need for genetic defects are blood panel, Bile acid test and knees and hips, these are all done by your vet, there is no DNA test for a canine as yet that will show defects.
