Default Do a lot of dogs think they should eat all the time?

This is making me crazy! Max (and Madison) are fed 1/4 cup of canned food when they get up in the morning (Madison actually gets slightly less b/c I add almost 1/4 cup of rice and turkey b/c of his gastric issues and he's bigger than Max). This is usually somewhere between 5:30 am and 6:30 am. At 10 am (but it's getting more like 9 am lately), Max is sitting, staring at me b/c it's time for their "snacks"....I give them about 12 pieces of their kibble. At noon, Max is now ready for a "treat". I make their treats so I am sure they're low calorie and low fat, but still......at 2 PM, Max is staring at me again for another "snack"....so, another 12 pcs of kibble. They get their dinner at precisely 5 PM (another 1/4 cup of the canned food), and then at around 8 pm, they get another "snack".

As if that isn't enough, if I have anything to eat, even if it's at the same time I feed them, Max is right there, staring at me like he's never seen food before.

I KNOW this is too much food, but how do I stop it? Max will sit in front of me and stare and if I don't give him something he starts whining and jumping on me. It's like it's just escalating with this meal/snacks (which I instituted b/c I thought it was better to give him some of his dry food instead of treats)/ and treats.

I'm trying to cut back on how many pcs of kibble I give them, but it just seems to have gotten out of hand, having to feed them all the time. And also, he expects to get a treat whenever they 'alert" me to someone being at the front door (usually nobody, but they pretend that they hear something so they can go bark and then get a treat for being so brave).

How can I put the brakes on this without feeling like I'm starving him? He looks so pitiful sometimes. Is this normal behavior or is it maybe boredom???
