I would recommend keeping the crate in a smaller enclosed room....like the bathroom or the kitchen and keeping the crate door open so that he can go in and out of it and know that it is a safe place that belongs to him. He really shouldn't be in a crate for any longer then 4 hours at a time. Maybe use an x-pen with the crate to give him more space and a pee pad so that he learns it is ok to go potty on a pad. He will also need toys and chew sticks of some sort. But yes, definitely leave him fresh water and food when you are gone for 6 hours. Good luck!
