I work about 5 mins walking distance from the Canada/US border. I try to have all my stuff shipped to my US address because by mail Canada Customs SLOWS things down so much.

I just had a friend send me some new grooming tools, through the mail. it took 8 weeks. When i received them I could clearly see which day she sent the prackage (8 weeks prior) but it was held up at customs for the longest time!!

She recently sent me another item and I assumed it would take 2 months like the last time, I received it 8 days AFTER she sent it. So go figure??

On e thing I try to do if something is being sent from US to Canada is to get a tracking number. Costs more for shipping but at least I can track my parcel and where it is.

I have also learned that when anything is sent by FedEx, etc the brokerage fees are INSANE...some as high at $100...but sent by US postal they were only $5. When we import our own stuff (have it sent to the US addy and then we bring it across the border) we act as our own broker and do the paperwork ourselves, we save money but lose time.
