Well I have use the x-pen for my girls to train, never use the crate just for sleept at night when they were puppy. I covered with pads and little by little I will remove the pads untill they got the picture that only in a pad, but I don't work so that made it easy for both, hope that I help you a little maybe some one who work full time can help you more
