Joey had to go on a diet. After a trick training class he gained an excessive amount of weight. Carrots aren’t a good diet food because of their effect on the sugar levels and insulin. I would suggest cutting the food by ¼ and adding green beans to the diet as they cause them to feel full. You may even have to cut the food by half; Joey only needed to lose a pound. You should try for a weight loss of about 1-2 ounces a week. If after the first week no weight has been lost, you can decrease the food further. We use the frozen variety of green beans because they contain no salt, and I chop them in small pieces. You could probably give about 10 of the petite variety or about ¼ cup chopped. For treats, I use his regular food, or freeze dried liver. Of course walking is the best exercise, and you can also make them run for a ball to receive a portion of their regular meal. We use all of Joey's breakfast for this, and half of his dinner meal. He really has to "work" to get fed.
