Or it could be that a person might have had bad experience with dogs that they have not shared with their significant other.
Actually my husband's family has this religion that believes dogs are bad luck to have around. But I guess they are too scared to say that to my face. His family has allot of respect for me because what I've done for them in the past so I couldn't care less if they don't like dogs. They will love mines because they love me.
