Because of a long illness with our last pet, my SO didn't want another pet. It took a couple of years of talking about it. I finally decided we had grieved long enough and started looking for a new pet. He was terribly against it, but they bonded instantly, and now I wished I hadn't waited so long. I think doing things together is the best way for men to bond. Taking the dog for a walk or a drive helps if someone actually needs help with this. I can't imagine anyone not bonding immediately though. I don't think a man that couldn't bond with a Yorkie would be a very good father to a human child, a man should be able to be protective of a Yorkie, and not need a macho dog to prove his manliness. Good test to weed out men, I think.
