Honestly, as long as your pup doesn't have any underlying disease that makes pain meds dangerous, if your vet won't prescribe something better I'd find a new one. Surgery is extremely painful and I just don't go for the, "If they are in pain they won't jump and hurt themselves" thing. Pain meds can make them tired which is a good thing and I don't think a doctor would withhold meds from a child to keep them calm. It just isn't right.

What is the vets excuse for not using an NSAID?
When Ellie had oral surgery (9 adult teeth pulled) it was before we knew she had a liver issue and she was on an NSAID for that (Metacam).
