Rescued Yorkie Pup Dry Hair and Skin, Lost Hair Hello,
About 2 months ago I bought two Yorkie puppies and gave one to a friend of a friend. It was her son's birthday and he really wanted a puppy. I bought the second pup planning on giving it to them. Just one of those nice things. They were both big dogs, going to be around 10 pounds when grown, so they weren't expensive like a tiny one. Plus more hardy for a kid. I thought that the mom of the boy would be able to take care of the puppy and raise him up, she seemed like she knew what she was doing. I told them that if they couldn't keep him that they had to give him back to me, and now I just got him back at about 16 weeks.
He was really filthy, when I put him in the tub the dirt just ran off of him. His hair was really thinned out on his back and it was really coarse and rough feeling to the touch. It was a couple of inches long, and when I put him in the tub it just matted up. He is changing color, but he's a week older than my pup and really closely related (they have the same father, and the moms are sisters out of the same litter), and my pup hasn't lost hair and his hair is really silky and smooth feeling. When I gave this pup away his hair was soft also, so he wasn't born with coarse hair. His skin feels dry and he's got dandruff, but no scratching or ringworm.
I use dog shampoo on them, but is there any way I can get his coat up? I cut all the long scraggly hair off and just left the new stuff that was coming in. It was twisted like a rope almost before I combed him out. Can I use people conditioner on him or will it dry him out even worse? I feed a chicken based kibble with a good protien and fat content, but who knows what the poor boy was getting before.
Can I give him people Vitamin E and Flax seed Vitamins? I've got gelcaps that I could cut open and put on his food. I would go to town and get some puppy conditioner, but my fiance just had a heart attack earlier this week, so I'm not really wanting to make the hour drive there, plus back right now.
This is more of a vent than anything else, I feel so bad that I gave the pup to these guys and he turned out like this. But he's here now and pretty soon he'll be spoiled like everyone else. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to help the little guy out? I'll be taking him to a vet soon, in the next week or two to get his rabies, final puppy shot and heartworm medicine. So I'll have him checked out then also.
Thank you!
