Do you have a lid from a tote that you do not use??? poke holes....tie it to the bottom gate and make sure it goes all the way to the floor. He is looking under the gate for a reason!!!!!!!!! BTW baseboard is usually about 3 inches and the carpet is soft so he can push down and it will give....COVER the hole at the botton and I BET he doesn't get out....
