We have a few on hand and wash them everyday. The smell is more than I can handle, and I don't want her walking around on a dirty pad, which makes her stinky too. If she's staying overnight with her grandparents, they wash it once a day, which seems to do ok. At home, though, she spends a bit of time in her room with the pad while I'm at work and it gets "full" pretty quickly. Having a couple of extra is good b/c even if you aren't able to do wash, you can tie the dirty one off in an extra plastic bag and do a load of them- just like wearing down your own undies until the last pair!
