I am very sorry that this happened . However, The dog was yours from the beginning. AND you are able to prove it, correct? I know that if a dog is microchiped and not regerstered then they are not able to find the owner... what gets me is that the people new the dog was microchipped. They should have put something up about found dog. This is a pure bred dog, and belonged to someone. I do n ot know if it was the pet sitter who just kept him or not....
I would try and get him back. Get the police report , too and show them. If you really want him back, i'd do what it takes.
It is because he is your dog. The people who have him are taking great care of him and all that, but, just because they find a dog, does not mean they should keep him without searching for the orignal owner first.
