There are two schools of thought on this one, old shcool is pluck everything in there because if you leave anything the bacteria can stay loist and cling to the hair and leave the ear vulnerable to infection....

BUT...now more and more vets are saying do not pluck excessively, plucking hair not ready to come out will hurt and leave the hair shaft vulnerable and open to infections...

My vet is pretty up to date and suggests using your fingers, making sur the ear is nice and clean and plcuk only what comes easily, If only one ot two hairs come, so be it...if the ear canal is hairy pluck a tiny bit daily, or trim the hair with a pair of blunt tip scissors.

By plucking only what hair is ready to come out it is NOT painful...grooming should NEVER EVER be painful.

When I was in school we were taught to pour ear powder in the dogs ear (for better grip and drying properties) and the using a small clamp called menstats to clamo the hair and twist like crazy till the hair was all removed form the ear canal...it was SOOOO painful for the dogs...now in my own shop I have not done that once. I refuse to hurt any dog.
