I got a sony viao last summer..love it. I would stay away from Dell or Gateway. My mom and sister got brand new Dells the same time and they are both a mess and have had plug and battery problems. I love my sony and would get another again. I don't care for the quality of Dell at all. Plus they make their systems hard for upgrades unless you buy their parts. Meanwhile there are other manufacturers that make parts (memory, hard drives, etc) at much cheaper prices. I got a nice Sony and then a few months ago I put in way more memory for an additional $60. I wanted to upgrad my sister's Dell for her but can't unless it's their parts. My kids have a Dell desktop and it's a PIA too.
If you can't afford the MAC ( I couldn't either especially for only wanting to be on the web etc) then get a Sony.
