To be honest, I wouldn't take a Gateway if someone GAVE it to me. My friends caught on fire IN his lap!! Of course Gateway was more than happy to ship him a new one, but when he opened it and took it out of the box BRAND NEW, and turned it on, NO operating system was found. They sent him another one and nothing but issue after issue with it. Good luck in your search for a new laptop though. I understand what you mean by not wanting to purchase one before researching, I'm the same way. I've always had HP's (Desktops and laptops) and haven't had any trouble with them.
