Sit when greeting is a great way to manage jumping up to greet. Four paws on the ground and good stuff happens.
I also train in eye contact with you... look at what is making you excited and look back to me and get a reward. You can teach the longer he stays calm the better the reward.

12 hours is a little long for a dog to stay at home if he can not pee on a pee pad so make sure he is able to relieve himself freely.

Now what make you say he does not have separation anxiety??
