The way I've always looked at it is that, when you buy from a pet store, they will then go get another dog from the puppy mill to replace the one you bought. This means that the puppy mills will continue to breed so that they can fill the pet stores.
Whereas, if you get a dog from a rescue, they are not going to go buy another dog to replace the one you got.
