just always make sure the blade of the clippers is laying FLAT agaist the skin and never cross sections a skin flap (that is how knicks occur).

Have a light and gentle hand. I use a #10f blade but I am not sure about the beard trimmers.

You could always ask how much it would cost for a local groomer to give a short and quick lesson on how to do it.
