Don't wet the coat until the mats are out..use a conditioner on your fingers, or a spray dematter..I love Vellus dematter..you can use a mat splitter on the coat that does not show, under arms and belly etc..they split the mat in half..yes, you will lose coat, but not nearly as bad as shaving it. Slowly work the mats out one by one withthe end of a metal comb..but if she is badly matted all over at the skin, you may have no other recourse but to clip her down...and one other thing...I do not find a silk coat will mat so badly it is impossible to detangle..and if her coat is soft, you may not care to show her anyway...what type coat do you think she has..??

OP I have to agree with Pat...I think you might have a soft coat...My Teddy is modified (Not sure if that is the same as soft coated or not) and you talking matting badly...To the skin when he was close to a year old, I had to have him cut down by a groomer...He came back naked as a Jay Bird lol...I hated it but it was my fault as I had no idea he was matting in the same places your baby is...Then I thought if I just brushed through the top I was doing right...Well I found out right fast I was doing it all wrong...I posted some photos here in this section or grooming section of my Sofie matted and how I removed them...Maybe this would help...I would try to get some of the Vellus Dematter that Pat spoke of she knows way more then I do about coats...I'm not trying to take away from your thread here but I would like to know how Pat use the Vellus and when, hope you don't mind.

Pat do you use the whole Vellus System on your Yorkies??? Right now I have 4 in Vellus ONLY after taking them out of oil..OMGoodness they MATTED to high heaven on me...5 did then...Took me forever to get the matts out...I think it was ALL my fault tho...Not getting all the oil out and keeping up on the mats theirselves...I didn't know they would mat so bad after taking them out of oil...

I have all the Vellus except maybe the dematter...Didn't think I'd ever need it lol boy was I ever so wrong. Lesson LEARNED...I email Vellus and Sharon there helped to get a good program down for them all but she has asked me to comb/brush all everyday with misting with the Stablizer 1st...I'm afraid if I do this everyday then I will BREAK their coats...What do you think??? They are not in oil or wraps just the Vellus cream...And bathing once a week as they don't go outside now at all...No mats this week thank goodness and their coats are really nice now and they are not itching like they was...I really think I didn't get all the oil out or like Sharon said I massaged their skin & it opened their pores up??? But I've done what she has told me to...Except for the brushing/combing every day...I do it every other day for now.

When and how do you use the Vellus dematter? Is it just as you feel one coming on or once you realize it's there big time??? Don't you have to wash their coats really well after you use it?? It's the only thing I don't have and their perfume...Afraid to use that or anything like that on them lol Thanks for any input. Hugs, Lee
