On the weekends, or whenever I want to sleep in, I will take Marley out to go potty around midnight. Sometimes later. I also try to avoid giving him water after 6pm (If he is acting thirsty, I will put an ice cube in his bowl). He normally starts to wimper around 5AM, but I know he does not need to go potty. When he starts to wimper I give a sharp "Shhhh!" or "No Marley!", and in less than a minute he understands that Mommy is not getting up and falls back asleep. I also avoid eye contact! Because if he sees my eyes he knows he has my attention!! However, if he continues to wimper for a few minutes I do take him out of his crate, and take him outside to go potty. I let him do his business, feed him breakfast... and then put him back in his crate, while I go back to bed. Marley and I have been known to sleep in until 11pm!!!
I would suggest if you really want to sleep in, putting your puppy in another room while you sleep. Perhaps, when your puppy starts crying in the morning you can take him out to go potty, let him run around the yard for a bit and feed him some breakfast. Then place him in his create with a couple of toys in another room. If he does whine just remember that all of his needs are met, and that he is OK. I guess this will only work for those people who can go back to bed in the morning, and not so much for those people who are the "Once i'm up, I'm up!" type of person

Anyhoo, good luck!
