They are usually just lipomas or cysts, occassionally warts, but they are all benign as your vet said.
The ones that burst are usually cysts.

You mustn't tie them off.
I know people sometimes do that to themselves with skin tags, but those are a completely different thing.
If one does burst, the best thing to do is to gently bathe it with a little luke warm salt water, a teaspoon dissolved in a pint, to remove any of the white lardy stuff that is coming out.
Sometimes it will then heal over completely, though sometimes you may get another one growing in the same spot & discharging the white fat a little again through the pore opening. Just bathe it off so it doesn't grow too big again.

This is good advice. My 11-year-old Bichon gets these. They don't burst, but she does scratch one now and then. I clean them up and put something soothing on them, like neosporin. Aloe gel is good, too, or something to stop itching. One of my Bichon friends recommended Vagisil and it helps a lot. It's soothing and healing. Lacy has one that she scratches a lot and I will have it removed the next time she gets her teeth cleaned, if she gets her teeth cleaned again. They don't seem to hurt, but may itch. They are easy to find and treat because she has pink skin and white fur. The vet has always said they are harmless except for the bother.
