I think it's just part of being an agile, tiny dog. Chewie does the same thing. I won't even go into how he's messed up my end tables by jumping from the couch onto them. He walks along the top of the couch behind our heads. We have a little window/opening that looks into the kitchen from the living room and it has a overhanging area to sit things on.
