Wow... I'm thinking it could just be because he's a puppy and he will grow out of it, but there's a few things I would suggest trying:
First, he's bored. You need to wear him out! 3 walks a day or Doggie Daycare would be fantastic for him! He can't chew through stuff when he's asleep! For little dogs even 1-2 days of daycare makes a HUGE difference.
Second, he needs something to chew on. Have you tried stuffed Kongs or Bully Sticks? I would do Bully Sticks when you are home (supervision required!) and Kongs when you are away. I just got an email that Kong is now making a small size black Kong - that is the tougher one.
Third, he could be doing it to get attention. Don't give him any attention when he does it just remove him from the situation to a crate or pen and ignore him. If he chews the comforter, try replacing it with a toy he CAN chew and then praise him. If he persists, remove him from the situation. Sammy is a screamer so I understand your frustration with that, but if you ignore it it DOES get better.
Just remember though he is still a puppy and it will improve. Loki used to destroy stuffed toys. One day I took it away from him every time he started to chew too hard and when it got a hole I let him watch me throw it away. I also taught him "easy" and "leave it" which helped, but finally he just lost interest in destroying the toys right around that age, like 12-18 months.
Good luck!! Maybe he also could benefit from some training classes? Sounds like he has some energy you could focus into something good!
ETA: My trainer would tell you that you simply can't leave ANYTHING out. Someone asked in class how to get the dog to stop eating his shoes and her answer was, "Why did you leave your shoes out? Put them away" I realize it's not always that simple but the more you can prevent the better. Put laundry in a hamper. Put shoes in the closet. Don't give him access to the bedroom when you aren't watching him. It will help because it gives him less opportunity to practice his habit.
