Not all females bleed a lot during the heat cycle and some keep themselves very clean. Once the female is ready for breeding the bleeding turns light pink and sometimes stops all together.

I found this definition on the internet about split heats:

Split heat is defined clinically as the situation of a bitch that goes into estrus, does not ovulate, and is again in estrus within two to four weeks; it is most common in pubertal bitches. Often, ovulation will occur after the second estrus.
