Is he crate trained? Any time we leave our little ones, they go in their crate. It is a humongous one with food and water.. and a potty area.. but they never use that anymore.
There are just too many possible things for an unattended baby to get into... from day 1, when we are gone.. they go into their crate, so that is what they are used to.
Others here probably have great ideas for you to use..
