Omg I start work soon...

I will be starting work soon and I am very nervous to leave him home alone for a long period of time. He barks when I leave for only a few hours. I have read that yorkies should be left in a small area, but he seems to bark less when I put up the gate to go up the stairs as opposed to blocking off just the kitchen. But, if I let him have the entire downstairs, I am worried he might start chewing on the leather couches, or maybe even pull cords (which he has never done before)!

What should I do? I only have one more week before I go back to work and I don't want him starting any bad habits!!
