I don't know about a hole in the heart but I do know about PDA. Can you tell us alittle more info: has he seen a cardiology vet? Has he had an echo/ultrasound? What exactly did the vet say regarding the condition and possible treatment? How old is the dog? Was this congenital or something else? Have you tried looking into a School of Vet Medicine in your state for info/treatment?
