I have had my own consulting business for 12 years now. I am a nurse by background and do health care consulting. I work out of my home but am on the road a lot as well. I can tell you that being single and working from home can be very isolating. It is something to consider. 3 years or so into my business I took an evening job making minimum wage at a fabric and craft store just to get some human contact and be around people with similar interests. The other thing to consider with self-employment is the fact that it may be hard to take a vacation. When you get sick, there is no sick leave and probably no one to fill in for you. Income can be inconsistent. If you have a good month you hang on to the extra bucks because next month may not be so good. Personally, I have found a happy medium. I now work full time for corporate America and have my consulting business part time. I get to work from home a couple of days a week and get full benefits. I also earn a consistent income.
