They say if your dog doesn’t have a problem with this, then don't have them expressed for the heck of it. Some puppies have trouble pushing the contents out when they poop, and symptoms that the anal glands need to be expressed are scooting on the floor, and licking the area obsessively. The vet will show you how to do this, and what to look for. If done incorrectly, you can push the contents further up the canal and this can lead to impaction and infection. This use to be a routine procedure among groomers, but now many vets say it isn't necessary and can be dangerous.
