I would stick with the crate if she feels safe and secure in it. If you are using the pads does it bother you that she poops on the pad in her crate???????

. If not and you are using pads and you want her too I would contain her in the xpen with crate inside open so she can go in and out. I guess it would be about safety and your comfort level with the pen. There is no perfect way. Consistency is key.
I know about those cold winters I am near Canada in upstate NY. Good luck and keep us posted.
